Associate Members Universities in Africa

CIVIS is a university alliance, co-funded by the European Universities initiative of the European Union. Apart from its 11 full member universities in Europe, CIVIS is enriched by the collaboration with 6 Associate Membership of universities in Africa:

A growing partnership

What started in 2022 as a strategic partnership, grew and solidified into an associate membership, formalised by the CIVIS Alliance Agreement, signed by all universities of the alliance in September 2024, in Salzburg, during the CIVIS Days.

Enhanced collaboration

All CIVIS programmes and activities are open, in principle, for staff and/or students from Associate Member institutions in Africa. Constraints or restrictions may apply in specific cases, due to funding, regulatory, or practical circumstances.

Mobility between CIVIS universities in Europe and Africa

CIVIS member universities and its strategic partner universities in Africa permanently invite applications for visits of members of a partner university to a CIVIS member university and vice versa.

Seed funding for research activities and African-European collaboration 2025

Academics and faculty members of CIVIS universities are invited to submit proposals in order to initiate new collaborative research activities or work on joint applications for larger research grants.

CIVIS Network-Building Activities: Common Framework

This call provides a framework for launching online activities, so that they can be followed and supported by the relevant CIVIS teams.

Rolling Call for proposals for projects with the CIVIS Open Labs

The CIVIS Open Labs Rolling Call funds projects linking CIVIS universities and local communities, fostering innovation, co-creation, and inclusive collaboration through interdisciplinary spaces.

Workshops on innovative pedagogies

Interested in Innovative Pedagogies? CIVIS has launched a series of workshops to share expertise in higher education teaching and learning and stimulate pedagogical innovation at the grassroots.

Student engagement

CIVIS empowers students to take an active role within the Alliance, as members of the Student Council, as CIVIS ambassadors or by leading projects to foster student community building. Find out how you can get involved.
