CIVIS Open Labs: think globally, act locally

Conceived as open and collaborative spaces, the objective of the CIVIS Open Labs is to create a forum where Universities and citizens can discuss local needs and challenges through innovative thinking and consequently participate in the co-creation of projects from an integrated approach, with the aim of developing innovative and inclusive initiatives that lead to a positive impact on citizens.
To this end, UAM launched its first CIVIS OpenLab Call for Projects, through seed funding with the aim of contributing to the development and implementation of those proposals that are presented in response to challenges and needs such as Health & Inclusion, Circular Cities, Environment & Sustainability and Education & Digital Transformation.

Following the call for the CIVIS Open Lab projects, 3 projects have been selected and will be launched by the Open Lab at UAM from July 2020 to July 2021:

Project 1: Circular cities: shaping our urban future through circular economy

In order to tackle circular economy in cities, the project proposes an action plan to improve the recycling of household waste management, its recovery and the sustainable use of resources.  Among other activities, the project will include a diagnostic study to evaluate the current degree of circularity measures implementation and a research on selective waste collection models and sustainable management in order to work with cities and improve their visibility on how waste is being managed, as well as to raise awareness on the importance of recycling among the population.

This will contribute to facilitating the adaptation process where urban, interurban and inclusive mobility will be addressed, as well as mobility between UAM’s campus and the municipalities of the northern area of Madrid.

Consequently, students from different UAM faculties together with academic mentors and expert professionals will provide community service as part of their professional, personal and civic training. They will also respond to the needs for psycho-educational support for families, teachers and students at all pre-university educational levels, as well as legal advice to disadvantaged groups and social entities.
