For participants, BIPs are a gift that keeps on giving For participants, BIPs are a gift that keeps on giving ======================================================== Learn 7 Οκτωβρίου 2026 CIVIS students, are you ready to take on another BIP challenge? The autumn call is open, and [44 programmes covering all CIVIS themes are waiting for you to discover them. ](https://civis-agora.widening.eu/civis-student-courses)A truly shared experience, which turns Europe and Africa into one, common lecture hall. Travelling for studies and connection has never been easier! With CIVIS BIPs, meeting people, sharing experiences, discovering places, and building projects, professional relationships and even friendships has already become a tradition. And the *“Social Sciences and Humanities Going Public”* is one of the programmes that bears witness for that. With five editions to show for, the programme unfolds its story - stressing the importance of collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and applying academic knowledge to social realities. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/sshgp8.jpg)Athens University History Museum, April 2026. Photo © NKUAThe development of Folklore, Ethnology and Social Anthropology studies within CIVIS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since its launch within CIVIS alliance in 2021, the course has developed into a series of successful Blended Intensive Programmes - hosted at first by the University of Tübingen and the University of Bucharest. From its initial focus on the relationship between private and public life in contemporary Europe (2022), the initiative expanded to address museums and archives, local cultures, migration, diversity, community engagement and the public relevance of Social Sciences and Humanities research. Growing student interest and participation across the CIVIS network culminated in 2025 with two complementary programmes, including a new postgraduate and doctoral-level initiative focused on research methodologies, academic writing and knowledge dissemination. Together, these programmes have strengthened international collaboration, interdisciplinary teaching and the societal impact of Social Sciences and Humanities research. ![Prof. Vassiliki Chryssanthopoulou, coordinator of the Athens edition](https://civis.eu/storage/files/vassiliki-chryssanthopoulou.jpg) > We feel like a family because the three universities that collaborate, the University of Tübingen, the University of Bucharest and the University of Athens, have shaped and formulated the programme together. We’ve been learning as we move from year to year, and we have developed friendly relations among ourselves, both the professors and the students Prof. Vassiliki Chryssanthopoulou, coordinator of the Athens edition Stepping into the shoes of the first-timers ------------------------------------------- The 2026 edition, coordinated by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, brought together 71 undergraduate and postgraduate students and doctoral candidates, selected from a total of 345 applicants along the Alliance. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/sshgp9.jpg)Athens 2026. Photo © NKUAWhile in Athens, student groups conducted ethnographic visits and field exercises, as well as visits to NGOs working with migrants and refugees. Besides lectures and discussions on the intercultural education of young migrants and refugees, the students also participated in workshops and field activities at several museums, and visited the Acropolis. One of the students said: > *As a local born and raised in Athens, I have visited the Acropolis Museum many times at different stages of my life and with different groups. However, my visit during the CIVIS programme felt different, as I found myself in a new context and discussed the museum with my team from a fresh perspective. The group discussion with participants from diverse backgrounds played a key role, bringing together multiple viewpoints and interpretations and enriching my overall understanding of the museum experience. It reminded me how valuable it is to reframe our relationship with places we think we already know. As an archaeologist and a Museum Studies student, I found it especially meaningful to step into the shoes of first-time visitors and to consider the perspective of the museum objects themselves* The former Co-Chair of the CIVIS Student Council, Katerina Schoina, now a PhD candidate in Folklore Studies, was responsible for the programme’s organisational support and contributed to the delivery of the last two editions of the course through her teaching assistance: ![Katerina Schoina, CIVIS BIP Administration 2026 & Teaching Assistant](https://civis.eu/storage/files/katerina-schoina_1.jpg) > That experience gives something more valuable than academic knowledge. The most valuable lesson of all is that, through collaboration, through meeting one another and through removing the barriers that sometimes make us feel different, we realize that we are actually the same. That is the most collaborative aspect of this BIP Katerina Schoina, CIVIS BIP Administration 2026 & Teaching Assistant From educational mobility to lasting international partnerships --------------------------------------------------------------- Over the five-year period, more than 300 undergraduate students at every stage of their studies, postgraduate students and doctoral candidates across the Alliance participated in the BIP. The programme created a shared environment for teaching and research, within which enduring relationships developed among universities and new opportunities for international scholarly collaboration emerged. And the collaboration between students and professors did not end with the conclusion of each edition. Several participants started exploring opportunities for postgraduate or doctoral study and for postdoctoral research with lecturers and researchers from other countries whom they had met through CIVIS activities. ![Gabriel Tamaș, Assistant Lecturer of Ethnology and Folklore Studies (UB)](https://civis.eu/storage/files/gabriel-tamas.jpg) > My experience with this is quite unique: I started attending this BIP five years ago as a student, and now I teach in it.
