Democracy celebrated at UAM via a "visual journey" through the main milestones of the Festival of the Iberian Peoples Democracy celebrated at UAM via a "visual journey" through the main milestones of the Festival of the Iberian Peoples ===================================================================================================================== 19 Οκτωβρίου 2026 In May 1976, the *Festival de los Pueblos Ibéricos* brought together over 70,000 people on the Cantoblanco campus, standing as a cultural milestone during Spain's Democratic Transition. It promoted freedom, democratic values, and social dialogue through music and culture. Today, the Autonomous University of Madrid remembers the event throughout the exhibition *The Celebration of Democracy*, open until mid December. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/uam4.jpg)photo © UAMThe *Festival de los Pueblos Ibéricos* (*Festival of the Iberian Peoples)* was one of the first major cultural events of the democratic transition. The exhibition, created with the aim of disseminating its history, cultural significance, social impact and legacy for the UAM, is one of activities organized for commemorating its 50th anniversary. It is a cultural, institutional and citizen project serving as an open space for citizen encounter, diversity and democratic coexistence. Through documents, images, testimonies and other materials, the exhibition is a visual journey through the main milestones of the Festival. It explores the historical context, the cultural and social dimension and the legacy of one of the greatest cultural symbols of democracy in Spain: > *We want to bring the history and main milestones of the 1976 Festival closer to the public, contextualizing them within the complex political, social, and cultural landscape of the democratic transition; as well as highlighting the significance of that event as a space for expressing cultural diversity, asserting freedoms, and promoting citizen participation, and its contribution to building a democratic society,”* the exhibition organizers stated. Special emphasis has also been placed on the role of the university community and students in that process of change. UAM’s rector Amaya Mendikoetxea noted that the documents, photographs, and testimonies gathered *"are not simply archival materials. They are traces of people who were here: students, professors, and staff of a very young university; musicians and citizens who participated in that gathering; a generation that lived through a country in transformation and wanted to be part of that transformation."* ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/uam1.jpg)photo © UAMThe exhibition's narrative is organized into three sections that allow visitors to explore the Festival's historical context, its development and key figures, its cultural and social dimension, as well as its meaning and legacy 50 years later: 1. The UAM in the 1970s: a cutting-edge campus in times of change 2. Horizon of coexistence: social dimension and commitment to democratic values 3.
