Χτίζοντας μια Συμμαχία με Αντίκτυπο: Πέντε Μαθήματα από τις Ομάδες του CIVIS Χτίζοντας μια Συμμαχία με Αντίκτυπο: Πέντε Μαθήματα από τις Ομάδες του CIVIS ============================================================================== Communication and Dissemination 25 Μαΐου 2026 Across its Education, Mobility, Research, Digital Campus and Communication Units, CIVIS has gradually built a portfolio of practices that go beyond delivering projects: they transform interinstitutional collaboration. During the CIVIS Units Summit held last April in Brussels, the five operational Units of the Alliance shared one best practice each and subjected it to peer questioning from other Units and external guests. The exercise was designed to both celebrate success and test **transferability, sustainability and impact**. The five practices that follow have matured through iteration, coordination and honest self‑assessment, and twe share them today so others can also benefit from the CIVIS experience. Education Unit: Supporting Transnational Innovation in Education ---------------------------------------------------------------- ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/education-unit-best-practice-support-transnational-education.jpg)CIVIS has moved beyond treating joint degrees as isolated pilot projects. With **more than 15 joint degree programmes** at different stages of development and [**three master’s programmes already running**](https://civis.eu/el/learn/find-your-master-s-programme), transnational education has become a structured, supported and repeatable process. The decisive factor is not volume but **systematisation**. Central alliance‑level support, through the **Education Unit** and other instances aligns academic design, legal frameworks, quality assurance and administrative workflows across universities. This prevents each consortium from starting from scratch and allows academic teams to focus on pedagogy rather than bureaucracy. What makes this best practice transferable is not the number of programmes, but **how they are supported**. Centralised expertise brings together academic teams, administrative services and governance bodies across institutions. Through centralised calls, continuous refining of processes and solution-oriented approaches, the alliance has been able to reduce reinvention, shorten learning curves and make complexity manageable. Programme teams are no longer left alone to “figure it out”; they are embedded in an alliance‑wide ecosystem. The key lesson is that **joint degrees do not scale through enthusiasm alone**. They grow when alliances invest in shared processes, institutional memory and cross‑unit coordination—accepting that transnational education is never static, but requires continuous adaptation as legal frameworks, student expectations and labour‑market needs evolve. ![Alexandru Carțiș, head of the Education Unit](https://civis.eu/storage/files/alexandru-cartis-1.jpg) > One of the major achievements of our alliance is to develop a wide range of educational activities: more than 200 Blended Intensive Programmes, around 40 educational programmes inclulding Bacherlor’s Master’s, Doctoral and the fact that we finally managed to launch a first range of micro-credentials Alexandru Carțiș, head of the Education Unit ### Lessons learnt - Joint degrees benefit from long-term support, beyond project‑based assistance. - Administrative alignment is as critical as academic excellence. - Visibility of *process* (not only outcomes) helps other institutions replicate success. ### Open questions - How is impact measured beyond enrolment numbers? - Who is the long‑term audience and how do we become more inclusive? - What do we gain and what do we lose when we scale up? Mobility Unit: BIP Management as an Engine for Large‑Scale Inclusion -------------------------------------------------------------------- ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/mobility-unit-best-practice-bip-management.jpg)[**Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)** ](https://civis.eu/el/learn/blended-intensive-programmes)have become one of CIVIS’ most visible success stories, with **more than 1,000 students participating each year**. This did not happen by accident. It is the outcome of **jointly developed, structured processes** spanning education design, mobility administration, digital support and promotion. The Mobility Unit highlights **BIP management as a collective workflow**, instead of a series of disconnected tasks, as a best practice of CIVIS Alliance. Evaluation data from the [**2024-2025** **BIP evaluation report** ](https://civis.eu/en/resources/civis-blended-intensive-programmes-2024-2025-january-2026)has made successes tangible, through figures and graphs, and has equally brought to light challenges that are now shaping future calls. By treating evaluation as a design tool rather than a reporting obligation, both the Education and Mobility Units are turning feedback into transformational leverage. The lesson is clear: **scale requires perseverance and structured management**. BIPs flourish when alliances accept the upfront cost of coordination and resist shortcuts. Research Unit: Seed-Funding that Nourishes Transformation --------------------------------------------------------- ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/research-unit-best-practice-seed-funding.jpg)[**CIVIS seed‑funding calls**](https://civis.eu/el/teach/civis-calls/previous-civis-calls-for-academics-and-researchers-1) in **2024 and 2025** supported **27 and 24 projects respectively**, spanning academic networks, workshops, doctoral schools, proposal drafting, consortium building and citizen‑science initiatives. [African associate member universities](https://civis.eu/el/discover-civis-alliance/associate-members-universities-in-africa) are involved in nearly all selected projects, anchoring research cooperation firmly in the alliance’s Europe–Africa dimension. What stands out is the long-term impact CIVIS seed-funding is producing. Several projects funded in the second call had already received support in the first, demonstrating expanding networks rather than one‑off collaborations. Links with other CIVIS initiatives, such as BIPs, open labs and academic networks, reinforce this cumulative effect. The newly formed Reseach Unit points out future challenges. Discussions during the World Café highlighted persistent issues: **funding, accessibility, sustainability and upscaling**. From opportunity discovery through public websites, social media and beyond, to application management, course participation and evaluation, the digital environment supports both students and academics. Student feedback, particularly from BIP evaluations, confirms its value. What makes this practice worth sharing is its **user‑centred framing**. The Digital Campus is not presented as an abstract system, but as a facilitator of concrete academic and mobility experiences. The next challenge, explicitly acknowledged, is to articulate **administrative value**: how digitalisation simplifies coordination, reduces duplication and supports alliance‑level reporting. One important lesson is to resist launching platforms before articulating **who gains what, and where**. What began as a [**three‑part video series** ](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-civizen)grew into a [community‑branding effort](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom/civis-unit-summit-a-community-in-action) during the first Units Summit in Bucharest (2025), then into a publication series profiling individual “[civizen” journeys.](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom?tag%5B%5D=37) It will next take the shape of a trivia game “Who wants to be a civizen?” proposed by the Mobility Unit for [CIVIS Days 2026.](https://civis.eu/el/connect/civis-days/civis-days) The transferable practice lies in **narrative continuity**. Instead of isolated campaigns, the Communication Unit builds a living story that connects students, staff and partners across time and formats. This continuity humanises the alliance and creates a relatable story all can identify with. In this shared space, research, education and mobility outcomes become human stories. Success happens when a concept that was born as an inside joke is reappropriated by the community as an identity marker, enhancing the sense of belonging. For other universities and alliances, the message is simple but demanding: **community does not emerge from branding alone**. And we are very proud of the results of the collaboration among our universites. Conclusion ---------- Together, these five practices show that CIVIS’ achievements are not the result of isolated successes, but of an alliance that has learned to work deliberately across units, disciplines and institutions. With the major challenge of seeking long-term transformation through short-term budget cycle activities, CIVIS, as all other alliances, is seeking to make longlasting impact. Whether through structuring transnational education, scaling blended mobility, nurturing research trajectories, embedding digital tools into daily practice or building a shared sense of belonging, the common thread is a willingness to invest in coordination, evaluation and long‑term thinking. Just as importantly, these practices are not finished models, but evolving processes shaped by feedback, constraints and honest reflection.
