Scaling Collaboration – BruLau expands at CIVIS level Scaling Collaboration – BruLau expands at CIVIS level ======================================================= Communication and Dissemination 25\. August 2026 Behind every CIVIS initiative are people who build bridges, create opportunities and bring international cooperation to life. And this is exactly what four professors from UNIL and ULB did. As founders of BruLau - an international doctoral summer school with Swiss & Belgian origins - they managed to transform the experience into a borderless one, with the support of the alliance. For Ghaliya Djelloul, Junior Lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lausanne, Sébastien Chauvin and Marta Roca Escoda - Associate Professors at the Centre for Gender Studies, and David Paternotte, Professor in Sociology and Gender studies at the Université libre de Bruxelles, the story of their CIVIS engagement began long before joining the Alliance. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/77.jpg)At the heart of their journey is BruLau, the main PhD summer school in gender studies in the French-speaking world. Developed in 2017-2018 by the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Lausanne and the Interdisciplinary Research Unit on Gender, Equality and Sexuality at Université libre de Bruxelles, BruLau got named after the two founding universities. And every year, it brings together for one week several dozen PhD students from across the Francophone world, along with leading scholars in gender studies, for an intensive week of teaching, methodological training and mentoring. Strengthening academic partnerships ----------------------------------- BruLau was built on a simple but ambitious idea: creating meaningful academic exchanges across institutions, disciplines and borders. Given its growing success, the project was redeployed within CIVIS with two new partners joining the network: AixMarseille Université and the University of Bucharest: > *Joining CIVIS felt like a natural step for the BruLau team because we shared the same philosophy of building networks and fostering collaboration between universities. BruLau has always been about creating connections across institutions, disciplines and countries”*, explains Ghaliya Djelloul. Thus, the initiative was taken to a new level by strengthening its international dimension. The team continues to be involved in several CIVIS initiatives, including Blended Intensive Programmes in [Marseille (2025)](https://civis-agora.widening.eu/offering/141/2047) and [Bucharest (2026)](https://civis-agora.widening.eu/offering/141/2046#gl_grp_g_68dtke7). ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/brulau4.jpg)Bucharest, 2026Collaboration in practice ------------------------- From the outset, the BruLau has aimed to welcome scholars and PhD students from the Global South by funding every year the travel of at least one professor and establishing mobility grants for doctoral students. In this spirit, it has decided to build on CIVIS’s network of African universities to develop long-term partnerships with Université Hassan II de Casablanca, Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, and the University of Sfax. Professors and PhD students from these universities took part in both editions of BruLau. At the other end, during the Dakar visit, the BruLau team met colleagues active in gender studies and strengthened collaborative ties. They also offered lectures, methodology workshops and one-to-one supervision sessions to UCAD master’s and PhD students. As Ghaliya Djelloul points out, the concrete field visits and exchanges allowed the team to better understand their partners’ institutional environments, teaching structures, and the constraints and opportunities they face on a daily basis: > *Being on site was essential! It enabled us to see how gender studies are organised locally, what kinds of research are being developed, and how these topics are approached outside the European academic context. We also gained insight into initiatives taking place at the margins of Europe, which often remain less visible but are highly innovative.* The Dakar workshops confirm BruLau’s transition from a European initiative to a Europe–Africa academic platform, driven by shared expertise, long‑term collaboration and a commitment to advancing feminist research in multilingual and multicultural contexts. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/brulau2.jpg)Dakar, 2026And the Alliance played a crucial role in building these sustainable links. The experiences helped move beyond abstract collaboration by grounding partnerships in a deeper understanding of each other’s realities. In doing so, they laid the foundations for more balanced, informed and sustainable cooperation. > *CIVIS gave us the structure to transform existing collaborations into long-term partnerships. The different funding schemes complement one another: Seed Funding allows partners to meet, develop ideas and build trust before launching larger initiatives such as a Blended Intensive Programmes. Beyond financial support, CIVIS accompanies projects over time. It creates an environment where collaborations can grow, mature and generate new research and teaching opportunities,* emphasises Ghaliya Djelloul. A platform for future collaborations ------------------------------------ Today, BruLau is much more than a doctoral summer school. It has become a widely acclaimed transnational platform for research, training and academic cooperation in gender studies. While it remains anchored in its founding Brussels–Lausanne collaboration, BruLau’s sustained engagement with African universities is giving shape to a broader trans‑Mediterranean community of gender studies researchers. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/brulau3.jpg)Dakar. 2026For the team, the most significant impact of their CIVIS journey goes beyond projects and activities: *“The greatest achievement has been the community we have built - one that continues to develop new ideas, new collaborations and new ways of addressing shared societal challenges together”*, conclude the professors.
