You do not have to attend the 3 of them.** PhD COURSES: How to use philosophical concepts in applied chemistry ------------------------------------------------------------------- **Friday 1 April - 14:00 - 16:00 CET** **Tuesday 5 April - 14:00 - 16:00 CET** These lessons aim to discuss how a systemic approach can be suitable in applied chemistry using the irradiation of multilayer films as a model. ### Main topics - Methodology - Techniques used - Levels of investigation - Chemometrics - Radical chemistry ### Learning outcomes - How to perform a multi-technique approach MASTER PHD COURSES: Nitroxides/alkoxyamines as school cases ----------------------------------------------------------- **Friday 1 April - 10:00 - 12:00 CET** **Tuesday 5 April - 10:00 - 12:00 CET** This course aims to describe the different solvent effects which may occur as well as the main parameters used for a quantitative description. As several solvent effects may occur at the same time, modelising based on Solvent Linear Relationship (similar to Linear Free Energy Relationship) will be discussed on the grounds of Koppel-Palm and Kalmet-Abboud-Taft equations. The interest in these equations will be highlighted by the investigation of solvent effects on EPR hyperfine coupling constants of nitroxides and homolysis rate constants of alkoxyamines ### Main topics - What are solvent effects? - What are the parameters used to describe solvent effects? - What are the models: Kalmet-Abboud-Taft and Koppel-Palm relationship - Examples of applications of the KP equation - Examples of applications of the KAt equation - Examples of solvent effects on spectroscopic properties: the case of hyperfine coupling constants in Electron Paramagnetic Resonance - Examples of solvent effects on reactivity: homolysis of alkoxyamines ### Learning outcomes - To know the main solvent effects - To know how to modelise solvent effects using KP and KAT relationships - To grasp the subtleties of solvent effects SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR: Persistent radical effect - from polymer applications to potential new drugs ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ **Monday 4 April - 14:00 - 15:00 CET** Alkoxyamines are one of the most versatile models of dynamic covalent bonds in radical chemistry. The potential of dynamic covalent bonds is well known and appreciated in Materials Sciences as Covalent Adaptive Network. The purpose of this talk is to describe the potential of such a unique property and molecules as potential drugs for cancer, parasitic diseases, bacteria, and fungi ### Main topics - Methodology - Techniques used - Levels of investigation - Radical chemistry ### Learning outcomes - How to perform a multi-technique approach **Sylvain Marque** has expertise in Physical Organic Chemistry of radical species applied in Biology, Chemistry, and Materials Sciences. He did his PhD in Marseille. As a post-doctoral fellow, he went to the group of Professor Barton for one year (Texas A&M University, USA), and then to the group of Professor Fischer in Zurich (Switzerland) for 3 years. For a few years, he held a professorship position at the Institute of Organic Chemistry in Novosibirsk (Russia). He has been teaching as a Professor at Aix-Marseille Université for several years now. Requirements and registration ------------------------------ This CIVIS webinar is open to both students and academics at one of CIVIS member universities. Registration is not required.
