The Europe-Mediterranean-Africa axis is an integral part of Aix-Marseille Université’s identity. The Téthys network, led by amU, brings together today 80 member universities from 20 countries across the Mediterranean region. The 2025 General Assembly offered the opportunity to celebrate the network’s 25th anniversary. More than a hundred participants from around the Mediterranean were present, while the Téthys network continues to grow: 6 new universities from Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon and Croatia are joining the network this year:

Our determination remains unsheakable: we will always be committed to supporting science and an open academic space", said Eric Berton, the President of Aix-Marseille Université.

A day in Marseille: looking back and looking ahead

On the first day of the event, a presentation tracing the network’s 25-year history highlighted its successes and positive impact, especially for the thousands of students who have been able to benefit from mobility within the network, to exchange, discover and study in a different context.

A round table discussion then explored opportunities for future development within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean alliances. The day concluded with a lecture by internationally renowned climatologist Joël Guiot, contributor to the IPCC.

Shared perspectives on the sustainable mediterranean city

On the second day, the Schuman campus in Aix-en-Provence hosted a study day dedicated to the sustainable mediterranean city. Several round tables highlighted the diversity of collaborative projects and the various institutional frameworks that facilitate cooperation across the Mediterranean. The active participation of students served as a reminder of the vital role of youth in collective reflection and in shaping a more sustainable Mediterranean future.

A project showcase, organised by members and partners of the network, enabled existing and emerging initiatives to forge new synergies.

Founded in 2000, the network has become a key player in fostering cooperation with Africa and the Middle East. Its mission is to promote collaboration in higher education and research, and to provide a space for exchange and sharing, with the aim of building a sustainable future in the Mediterranean.

This Anniversary Assembly was a great opportunity for Aix Marseille Université to affirm its role as an international player and to continue building bridges between the shores of the Mediterranean, towards the next 25 years.
